After completing graduate school, I joined my mentor's architectural firm where I spent 3 years learning the fundamentals of architectural design among my seniors with rich personalities. After joining DAIKEN SEKKEI, I spent my first 10 years working on various projects and the next few years removed from design practice, spending fun but harsh days working on a different proposal each week. Aside from my accomplishments, the time spent and my thoughts at the time are what have shaped my approach to architectural design to this day. Since returning to design in practice, I have been involved in projects for educational facilities, sporting venues, aquariums, research facilities, overseas projects, and more.
My current duties are mainly corporate management and office operations. The qualitative goals I have set as office manager are: “striving to improve our products, services, operations, organizations, and human resources, creating new value that contributes to society through manufacturing, and improving customer satisfaction and employee happiness."
As part of a core industry that supports people's lives, the architectural community must contribute to the development of society. Innovation is defined as the shift from technology to bringing value to the world. Within this framing, we should change our position and role in manufacturing from the view of achieving customer demands to that of asking what kind of approach and solutions we can offer on social issues, and of offering new value in cooperation with other industries. In essence, I believe in the importance of creating new value by demonstrating our knowledge about architecture and cities. We should be identifying potential issues for cities, society, and our customers without being caught up in the given conditions, and solving these issues while sharing them with the various stakeholders.
Based on a philosophy of having our employees find meaning and live fulfilling lives by contributing to the creation of an affluent society through manufacturing, we want to be an organization where, in the spirit of autonomy, each employee can individually demonstrate leadership and take organizational actions that emphasize speed. With this in mind, I endeavor to manage the office with a focus on cultivating worker mindsets along with their skills. The workplace environment of the Tokyo Office is quite well-organized in many ways, so I think it's time to increase the proportion of design work a little more.
